Sunday was the official close to our boisterous summer camp of 2009! I must admit, I felt myself breathing a deep sigh of relief that I had made it through the job of Default Camp Cook! I hung up the broom and dried my hands feeling quite pleased that the summer was a success, though not through my doing...there was lots of help! It's always a team effort at camp!
The dust had barely settled from the group's van departing when we (my family and parents) made the spontaneous decision to drive 4 1/2 hours to go serve someone else. We felt pretty worn standing on the doorstep of our destination. But I felt the weariness lift a little as we were all welcomed with the same warm hug as always! Grandpa needed a work crew to help with his overwhelming task of fall yardwork on his 1 1/2 acre property. And Grandma had just come home from the hospital after a recent surgery. Their plate was a little full!
I spent the next day with my bottom side pointing up, bagging the leaves and branches that were shed by the hedgetrimmers. I thoroughly enjoyed the "razzing" of my husband throughout the day about how thoughtless he was to just pushing his little button on the trimmer and leaving hundreds of leaves behind for us to gather up!
Though I was joking, it got me to thinking about how often I feel like I get stuck with the grunt work...the unglamorous jobs that nobody likes to do. In the middle of these thoughts, I was taken back by The Whispering Thought of: Jesus' whole life was to do the grunt work of His Father. Well, that little plumb line revealed in me far too many bag fulls of yucky attitude and skewed vision. The more I contemplated, the more I found myself desiring to follow the path of my Savior, joyfully doing the grunt work whenever it presented itself to me. I think lots of times it's like homework was when I was growing up...overwhelming and miserable at the thought of it. Not so bad once I'd get started! Not that I minded helping my grandparents...that was actually a joy. It's all the other days of grunt work that stream along.
We have returned home now and I am feeling reinspired to strive to serve with my sunny side up!
Speaking of sunny, I couldn't resist putting in a couple sunny smiles!
Tegan, like any boy, loves the machines...mow time! Kinsley & Selah did some contemplating of their own: Swimming or Yard Work...Tough Choice!
May your day be sunny!
